Rhythm Playshop
We will explore different rhythms and rhythmic instruments from around the world, learn about them, the cultures they come from, and how to play them. We will explore many musical and rhythmic concepts that arise while playing music with others. We will also make and/or find percussion instruments out of common found objects.

The Harmony Gang seeks to be a joyful, engaging music-making experience for young people who like to sing.  Designed as a continuing study to basic musical theory, vocal and ear training, and performance skills. Singing with the chorus gives children a forum to work together to bring to life music of great beauty and to share this achievement with others. This process of ensemble music making cultivates our members’ sense of responsibility, commitment, self-discipline, confidence, and poise, key ingredients for success in any field of endeavor. Students will be encouraged to appreciate high standards of artistic excellence and to cultivate a love of beauty that can enrich each individual’s experiences for a lifetime.

The students will learn:
1) The basics and applications of playing in a musical ensemble.
2) Some ideas, techniques, concepts, and applications of becoming comfortable with musical improvisation.
3) Active listening through matching pitch, call and response games, and the synchronization of beat placement, as well as experiencing some cultural music diversity through exposure to vocal and rhythmic ensembles from around the world.
