Marimba Festival

January 8, 2020 by ladyarlyn

Dear Ones,

We hope that you are having a good 2020 so far.

This Wednesday, Kori, Jeff, and Adam from our public radio station, KVNF, came to record the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble in the drum room and interview us for their show, Talkin’ Music, to be aired on Thursday the 16th at 6pm and Saturday the 18th at 10:30am. We’re looking forward to hearing it and hope you can tune in 90.9fm locally or kvnf.org globally.

We are deep in our final preparations for the upcoming Marimba “Festival” January 17-19th that will feature a listening concert, dance concert, kid’s matinee concert, and a hands-on marimba workshop. This project is so close to our hearts that it is hard to say anything except this – please come join us as we share ourselves as generously as we know how with our beloved community. This is the final concert for this season’s World Music In Paradise Concert Series – thanks for making 2019-2020 such a great season.

If you would really like to support us and to see what we’ve been spending our time doing in 2019, $35 will get you tickets to both nights, the Listening Concert and the Dance Concert – pick them up locally (two night deal not available online) at The Cirque or The Paradise Theatre.

Friday, January 17, 2020 Listening Concert Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble online tickets
Saturday, January 18, 2020 Dance Concert Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble online tickets

This funky 8-piece marimba ensemble will be joined by the sounds of mandolin, trumpet, flute, melodica, drumset, cajon, steelpan, percussion, clarinet, saxophones, baritone horn, voices, and more. We have learned up a lot of songs this year, so the concert material will be different each night as we are only planning to play 4 or 5 special pieces both evenings. As far as our overall repertoire for the weekend, about 2/5’s of the music we’ll be playing consists of our original compositions from members of the band, about 2/5’s of it will be our arrangements of musical selections from around the world, and about 1/5 will be our versions of pop songs and other modern music from the US.

ALSO, bring the kids to the Free Kid’s Matinee with the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble on Saturday, January 18, 2020 from 1-2pm.

The hands-on Marimba Workshop is January 19th at the Paradise 10:30-noon. $25. With David Alderdice.

Many blessings,
Arlyn and David

“Collective assembly has long been a part of the human experience. . . . Collective assembly is more than just people coming together to distract themselves from life by watching a game, concert, or play—instead it is an opportunity to feel connected to something bigger than oneself; it is an opportunity to feel joy, social connection, meaning, and peace.” Shira Gabriel, Jennifer Valenti, Kristin Naragon-Gainey, and Ariana Young

Spring into Summer Update

April 25, 2019 by ladyarlyn

Dear Ones,

I don’t know about you, but this was a long winter for us. It’s been so nice to be outside more now, spending time walking in nature, enjoying the blossoms and feeling the renewal that spring offers. May you release that which is not serving. May you plant, nurture, and grow that which is in service of life.

The Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble has been having fun working on new original material and musical ideas and will continue this as a band focus through the spring and early summer (with a couple gigs sprinkled in). Here is a link to a funky & fun new composition, Squeaky Toy Funk, that we got to debut live in March! It features lots of musical squeaky toys and got lots of smiles.  youtu.be/9vrVfD3KpAM

Our little one is now a big kid of 5 who can ride a pedal bike through this strange beautiful world we inhabit. We encourage you to keep staying connected to the people you love. Thanks for being you.

sending blessings,

Arlyn & David

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground!   I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.

David Alderdice and Friends at Mountain Harvest Festival, Paonia, CO

September 28, 2013 by Embodying Rhythm

David Alderdice (drummer, percussionist, educator, arranger, and practitioner of the healing rhythmic arts) has put together a fun, eclectic world music ensemble featuring violin, reeds, double bass, and drums.  This project combines improvisation with original arrangements; the sound is energetic, groovy and diverse in its range. David will be joined by his fellow Feast alumni’s Dr. Marcin Ardent (solo violinist, chamber musician, teacher, and arranger), and Benjamin de Kock (double bassist, freelance musician, and symphonist), as well as April Johannesen (multi-reeds instrumentalist, teacher, and performer).   They will be joined by a few special guests adding sounds of the trombone, tenor banjo, and more.
