June Update

June 8, 2016 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

The weather is quickly feeling summerish, and the little one especially is loving it up. We’re enjoying digging in the garden and looking forward to hiking and camping. We hope you have some fun plans for the summer.

We are really excited for marimba ensemble summercamp and hope you’ll join us. Our camps are open to players 8 through adult and will be a lot of fun (assuming you like playing fun music with mallets in a group). The early registration deadline is May 31st, more details below. From last year’s summercamp participant Jen Sanborn, “Learning to play the marimba has made made me a better painter and a happier person. It has widened my inner pathway to deeper creativity and joyful expression.”

We are also very excited to unveil the amazing artist line up for the new 2016-2017 Blue Sage World Music Concert Series on June 1st. Here is a video of David and his former teacher Jon Seligman, along with Meg York and Pete Jacobs at a music workshop at the local high school. They played as part of the World Music Concert Series in March. click here to watch

The NFV Community Parade & Stage Band has been amping up lately with close to 20 musicians showing up to rehearsals. We are gearing up for 2 summer sit down concerts and 1 parade in Crawford. We will also have a special guest director, clarinetist Meg York, working with the band on June 13th and 20th.

We hope to see you soon.

blessings,
Arlyn & David

“To know sound you have to notice it first.” – W.A. Mathieu The Musical Life

“Recently I’ve been pondering a process I call “bewilderment”—or, as I like to pronounce it, be-wilder-ment. It’s like enlightenment, but way less ambitious. I figure if we all become a little wilder, a little more present, a little more connected to whatever it is that makes dogs so damn happy, we’ll feel better and do better things. The first step in the bewilderment process, upon which everything else depends, is simple: CALM DOWN.” ~Martha Beck

Marimba Project this Weekend & David’s TEDx video

April 20, 2016 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

It has been truly amazing to watch the Marimba Project grow over the course of the last two and a half years. Thank you for helping it grow with us! We are excited to have a youth performance ensemble (YPES Marimba Band) and faculty ensemble (ERF Marimba Ensemble) to showcase for you this weekend and two concerts: Delta – Saturday, evening and Paonia – Sunday matinée. Great fun for the whole family! (full details below). The Marimba Project will also host a workshop in Delta. Workshops are a great way to try out the sounds of the instruments and as much fun as it is to watch a performance, it’s really fun to play.

We are also pleased to announce the release of the video of the TEDx talk that David gave in February and happy that we can share it with you: Watch it here.

We look forward to seeing you soon.

World Music on Saturday March 19

March 17, 2016 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

The next concert in the World Music Concert Series at the Blue Sage Center for the Arts will take place on Saturday March 19th at 7:30pm, Near Eastern Sounds: Old & New, and will feature percussionist Jon Seligman from Baltimore, clarinetist Meg York from Lakewood, double bassist Pete Jacobs from Boulder, and percussionist David Alderdice.  I highly recommend this concert (tickets). David says, “Jon Seligman has been a great influence in my musical journey; he was my main percussion teacher in my early twenties.” Seeing them play together is a treat.

Jon and Meg arrived yesterday. The little one approves, and had them both reading stories not long after their arrival. We couldn’t stay at their rehearsal too long because AC wanted to accompany them on drum-set or bass marimba, but what we heard was lovely!

David and I started dating in 2008, right after the last time Jon Seligman was in Colorado. While David was on tour in Germany soon after, I spent five long weeks pining for him and listening to the live recording of he and Jon’s concert. The show in 2008 was a great show; Jon is a great presenter – as a college professor he is able to speak about the musical material in an exciting and informative way as well as being an incredibly talented musician and composer. The concert this coming weekend will feature world groove, improvisation, traditional tunes and educated commentary.

Live music is such a powerful portal; I’m not saying that a concert can (or cannot) completely enlighten you, but it can transport you and lift your spirits and soul. These times are strange and it is a good thing to come together in celebration of beauty and art. Let us affirm what we love and grow that together as a community.

many blessings,
Arlyn

Before death takes away what you are given,
give away what is there to give.

No dead person grieves for his death.
He mourns only what he didn’t do.

Why did I wait?
Why did I not … ?
Why did I neglect to … ?

I cannot think of better advice to send.

I hope you like it.

May you stay in your infinity.

Spring

Spring appears
in whispers and hushed tones,
as the bellowing winter
bows away.
Drowsy flowers come to
attention,
waking from their sleep –
yawning;
with heads turned upwards
towards the maestro called Sun,
I watch with anticipation
as. . .
the concert begins.
