September Update 2021 – Free Outdoor Marimba Concert in Paonia Town Park

September 14, 2021 by ladyarlyn

Hello out there!

It’s been awhile since we’ve sent out a newsletter, we hope you had a great summer and are doing well as the days shorten into fall time.

We are excited to be offering a free outdoor concert with our marimba band at the Mountain Harvest Festival this year, see full details below as well as the details for the upcoming World Music in Paradise Concerts.

This will most likely be the only chance to see the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble play live in person for the rest of 2021, so please tell your friends and bring out your families. There’s been some confusion in the promotion, but we will only be playing one concert and it is in Paonia Town Park at 1:30pm on Saturday September, 25.

Here is a video of us playing the 80’s hit song, Don’t You Want Me, from our last concert with a live audience in January of 2020.

Ladies, I’d like to personally invite you to the Women’s Drumming class at 12:30 on Sunday, Sept. 26th, at Paonia Town Park. I’d love to see you there and play some music together.

There are two World Music in Paradise concerts in October. The performers will be playing outside in Poulos Park in downtown Paonia. We are hosting a 22 member Balinese Gamelan Orchestra with traditional Music & Dance on Oct. 1st and a Flamenco Fusion quintet on Oct. 8th.

There’s also a new video in David’s Found Percussion Series where he is playing music on mushrooms – click here for a Porcini/King Bolete Groove.

And here’s a fun a play-along solkattu video that David and Arlyn recorded for a virtual summer-camp last year. Click here and be ready to jump up and join us in some solkattu.

take care,
Arlyn & David

March Update

March 12, 2021 by ladyarlyn

Dear Ones,

We hope you are well. We hope you have been enjoying some time by the fire metaphorical or physical as well as some time in the wonderland of winter. It’s been nice noticing the sun returning to the northern hemisphere slowly and surely, one day after another.

We are excited to announce that we are now able to record music professionally from our property’s Embodying Rhythm recording studio. If you or anyone you know might like to collaborate on some music with us or would like having some drums or percussion recorded for your musical project, now is a good time to connect with us. We are looking forward to collaborating with folks on musical projects as well as beginning to record our second Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble album and other side projects. Please be in touch if you would like to connect with or hire David for some drum or percussion tracking on your current or next music project.

We are also offering drum, percussion and general music lessons online to anywhere in the world as well as in-person at our Embodying Rhythm outdoor teaching studio in Hotchkiss, CO. If you or someone you know would like drum lessons, now is a great time of year to dive into rhythm.

Additionally, David is currently also available by commission to compose, arrange and/or record music especially for you.

Here is a link to a new video where David explains his newly set-up hybrid frame drum percussion kit and where he shows how he created a groove to fit with a recording project that he was asked to do for a virtual Black History Month concert for Illinois State University. The link to the finished video of the arrangement of Mongo Santamaria’s iconic tune, Afro Blue, is here.

We recently found this new to us video online of David playing and introducing his arrangement of Dave Brubeck’s Blue Rondo a la Turk (with a Jim Henson and Star Wars twist) with the band, Feast, from a few years ago. Link here.

Be well and we look forward to sharing some time and music with you as the days get warmer.

Blessings,
Arlyn and David

Late August Update

August 28, 2020 by ladyarlyn

Hello Dear Ones,

We hope you are doing well. We have been switching our family focus from multi-day summer backpacking trips in the mountains to being down in the valley more, homeschooling and jumping on all the garden harvesting and food processing and land chores which are in full force right now.

If you or anyone you know is interested in learning drums or percussion or is wanting to deepen your/their relationship with music, David is now officially offering private on-line music lessons through Skype or Zoom or whatever. He is also available for private lessons. He is offering in-person lessons outdoors in Hotchkiss as well as the online lessons. For more information on lessons, contact David: david@embodyingrhythm.com

There are a few more backpacking found percussion videos that David has to share. The newest ones are bones with sticks, trowel and tp on a rock, wilderness boundary fence post with tent stakes, and dried glacier lilly seed pods. Here is a link to those videos.

The one gig that the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble was able to play this summer was as a part of the Paradise Fest, which is a virtual fundraiser for our local music venue, the Paradise Theatre (which is the same venue that is home to our World Music in Paradise Concert Series). In this 17 minute live set, you will see what we’ve been up to and hear a medley of 3 new original tunes, 2 versions of original tunes from our album, and 2 traditional tunes. It was recorded outside of Hotchkiss in mid-July and was just released virtually on Wednesday, August 26. You’ll notice a new member, Rose Costello, thanks to Rose for jumping in! We feel so grateful to be able to play and create and share this music.  Click here to go straight to the new Paradise Fest video of the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble on youtube.

Here is a little more information about the other great local artists performing virtually for Paradise Fest as well as the fundraising aspects for the Paradise Theatre. Starting Monday, August 24, The Paradise Theatre will be streaming (via Facebook & Youtube) Paradise Fest Videos. Musical acts to be featured are the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble, Hard Pressed, David Starr, Joe Alan, Ford & Fitzroy, Gabrielle Louise, Lily Lowe (student), and father son duo of Elliott (student) and Jon Hickam. Watching the videos are absolutely free. At any time over the next month, if you are called to support some local musicians and our small local venue, you can make a donation to your favorite artists and venue; 50% of the proceeds will go to the musicians & the other 50% will benefit the Paradise Theatre. Any donations that the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble gets will go toward the recording of our 2nd album which has been delayed due to covid, but we are ready to record once we find a good place to set up all our instruments and recording gear for a few weeks. And the Paradise will use any donations that they receive to keep live music happening in rural Colorado with their World Music in Paradise and Pickin’ in Paradise Concert Series offerings.

best wishes,
Arlyn and David
