The impact of a healthy lifestyle can be hard to grok when we are younger. And often times our lifestyle just kind of happens without us consciously choosing it. Maybe we don’t really think about when we are going to eat or sleep, we just do it when we remember to. Maybe we don’t exercise until we’ve gained 50 extra pounds. Maybe we do not consider conscious relaxation until we experience a panic attack at work. Perhaps we think it is normal to not sleep soundly because no one else does. In the same vein, it is unimaginable to feel the bodily sensations of a person who has practiced yoga for 30 years. It is nearly impossible to comprehend the impact a regular meditation practice has unless you have one. We are unable to comprehend the impact something done, or not done, over the course of decades can have on the quality of our bodies, minds, emotions and spirits. . . – Amy Williams

Drum Class on Sunday and World Music – Vocals & Harps – on Monday

September 18, 2019 by ladyarlyn

Greetings,
Our motto 10 years ago was “drums are cool” and we still feel that way.
We are excited to be presenting a 3 series Rhythm & Drum workshop series at the Paradise Theatre, starting with a Women’s Drumming and Men’s Drumming class both this Sunday the 22nd. Both David and I get a lot of folks asking us about group classes and when we will offer more, how to connect with rhythm, or go deeper, or mentioning that they want to play, or mentioning that they have always wanted to learn to drum. If this is you, please answer the call – this class series is especially for you. more info below
David and Dylan Fixmer had tons of fun rehearsing, performing and hanging out with Glen Velez and Loire Cotler while they were in town earlier in September. While in town Glen and Loire recorded a Talkin’ Music show at KVNF and it will air twice this week on Thursday 6pm and Saturday 10:30am. You can listen live 90.9fm, or via the web at kvnf.org or find it in their digital archives anytime after this weekend.
Here is a video from the concert of one of Glen’s original tunes, Hittite Prana, with David (on hybrid frame drum kit) and Dylan (on mandolin) jamming with Glen and Loire.
Up next, we have a very cool quartet from Finland coming to perform in Paonia for a special MONDAY evening concert on September 23rd (this Monday) as part of the World Music in Paradise Concert Series. The group, Kardemimmit, is composed of 4 women vocalists whom also play the Finnish national instrument, the kantele (different sized wooden harps) and they sound like a magical Finnish forest, playing original material based in the Scandinavian, Balkan, and Eastern European traditions. Highly recommended. If you are interested, feel free to check out their videos on their website.
We hope to see you soon.
blessings,
Arlyn & David

Glen Velez & Loire Cotler in Paonia, CO this Weekend!

September 4, 2019 by ladyarlyn

Greetings,

I hope that you are well and that your transition from mid-summer to late-summer has been good. We got to spend a lot of time this summer in the mountains and are just starting to get into the full-day Kindergarten routine. I got to go to my first soccer practice as a father a couple days ago. It’s a whole new era.

I am so excited about Glen and Loire coming to Paonia. I pick them up at the airport today. Arlyn wanted me to send out the following note. Some of you might have seen it on facebook already, but I’m sure that some of you haven’t.

As the first concert in the 2019-2020 World Music in Paradise Series we have Glen Velez and Loire Cotler for a workshop and performance this weekend. Concert is on Sat. September 7th and workshops on Sun. the 8th. Tickets are available at the Paradise, the Cirque, and Brown Paper Tickets online. Workshop reservations by replying to this email or 872-4238.

Right about 20 years ago, I took some drum classes with the internationally renowned percussionist and frame drum expert, Glen Velez. He introduced me to the simple single headed frame drum as well as many different ways of playing it, which in essence, helped spearhead my musical direction, from that point, into the future. I dedicated a lot of my time over the next 10-15 years studying and practicing different frame drums from around the world. I found a lot of other teachers besides Glen to help me learn as much as I could. Most of the frame drum teachers I found were also students of Glen’s. Not only has Glen reinvented the ways of modern frame drumming, but he is also an amazing educator. His wife, Loire Cotler, is also an other worldly vocalist and a great teacher.

I am extremely honored not only to have Glen and Loire here in Poania next weekend to present a concert and two very accessible workshops at the Paradise Theatre, but I am also very excited to get the opportunity to sit-in and play with them for a few songs at their concert here with Dylan Fixmer on bass and mandolin. Jeannette Carey, Beth Quist and Jeff Skeels will sit-in and sing with us for a piece as well. Glen’s work has been such a musical inspiration and influence on me throughout the years, so I am extremely glad to be able to share his music with you and the Western Slope community.

I hope you have a great day,
David

August 19, 2019 by ladyarlyn

Hello Dear Ones,

We hope that you’ve had a good summer and are enjoying the fruits of your labors. We were able to get into the mountains a lot this summer, which is why you haven’t heard from us in a little while. We’re back in town and ready to start school and to roll out some fun, fall offerings.

We’re excited to announce our 2019-2020 World Music in Paradise Concert Series Line-Up. See all the details below or online. The series starts at the beginning of September with Glen Velez and Loire Cotler offering a concert on Saturday, Sept. 7th and workshops on Sunday, Sept. 8th. Glen Velez is the teacher’s teacher of frame drumming and we highly recommend this event and the workshops! David (along with Dylan Fixmer and other friends) will get the opportunity to sit in and play with Glen and Loire during this special performance (Glen’s only show this year in Colorado).

best,
Arlyn & David

Arlyn just finished reading “Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone” by Brené Brown, and she (Arlyn) highly recommends it, especially if you ever feel alone in your beliefs & views or ever feel out of place. See link for more of Brown’s work and you can check out her wildly popular Ted talks on youtube.

“The opposite of true belonging is “fitting in”. . . Belonging is belonging to yourself first. Speaking your truth, telling your story and never betraying yourself for other people. True belonging doesn’t require you to change who you are, it requires you to be who you are. And that’s vulnerable.” -Brené Brown

Spring into Summer Update

April 25, 2019 by ladyarlyn

Dear Ones,

I don’t know about you, but this was a long winter for us. It’s been so nice to be outside more now, spending time walking in nature, enjoying the blossoms and feeling the renewal that spring offers. May you release that which is not serving. May you plant, nurture, and grow that which is in service of life.

The Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble has been having fun working on new original material and musical ideas and will continue this as a band focus through the spring and early summer (with a couple gigs sprinkled in). Here is a link to a funky & fun new composition, Squeaky Toy Funk, that we got to debut live in March! It features lots of musical squeaky toys and got lots of smiles.  youtu.be/9vrVfD3KpAM

Our little one is now a big kid of 5 who can ride a pedal bike through this strange beautiful world we inhabit. We encourage you to keep staying connected to the people you love. Thanks for being you.

sending blessings,

I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.

We think by feeling. What is there to know?
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Of those so close beside me, which are you?
God bless the Ground!   I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.

Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how?
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.

Great Nature has another thing to do
To you and me; so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.

This shaking keeps me steady. I should know.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.
