20 person Gamelan Orchestra next weekend and September Update

September 10, 2018 by ladyarlyn

Dear Ones,

Well, school has started and while the days are still warm, we can start feeling a touch of the cool fall winds in the air and a few of our trees are already turning colors. Hooray for sauerkraut, fresh apples, tomatoes and the late summer/early fall bounty.

We look forward to a 20 person Balinese Gamelan orchestra on September 21st as the first concert on the World Music in Paradise season. Gamelan is not something that you get to see every day here in rural Colorado and it will transport you to a different time and place. There is a workshop on Saturday September 22nd so that you can try playing Gamelan too. Please come out and support bringing World Music to the North Fork Valley. Also, please contact us if you are interested in information about sponsoring the World Music in Paradise series. Thanks to everyone who came out for Latcho Drom and made that evening a success!

These next three months are going to be very full of music and music offerings for us, please see the list below or full list here on our website. David is drumming for Celebrate the Beat at all three North Fork Valley Schools as well as in Crested Butte and Arlyn is offering a women’s drumming class in September (two spots left, details here) and a marimba class series in October. We will also be busy preparing and performing some other great concerts that we have on the books. We hope that you are doing the things that offer your gifts to the world as well as rejuvenating your spirit through doing the things that call you.

blessings,
Arlyn and David

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
For a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about your despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Update + Summercamp Early Registration Drawing Near

April 24, 2018 by ladyarlyn

Hello Dear Ones,

We are really looking forward to the first Embodying Rhythm Marimba, Rhythm, and Music sleep-away summer camp for teenagers and adults this July. We would love to encourage you to check-in and see if you are called to join us. We have a really amazing team gathered as staff, some super great students signed up, and we are extremely excited for the musical material  that we will be covering during this five and a half day fun intensive music camp. If you are called to join us for this percussive adventure learning music in a joyful, safe, uplifting, immersive, community oriented environment, please do: learn more.

Our family has really been appreciating the fruit blossoms and the sound of the bees buzzing in the trees this spring. We have been having picnics under the crabapple tree in full bloom this week. If you haven’t had a chance yet to breathe deeply into a blossoming fruit tree, or to listen to the bees doing their springtime thing, we’d recommend taking a moment for this type of medicine.

We had a very inspirational marimba workshop this past Sunday. Thanks to the folks who made it out to go deeper into the fun realms of music and rhythm. In two weeks, on Sunday, May 6th from 2-5pm, we’ll explore the rhythmical play of music based in 3 (including 6’s & 12’s) and the inherent poly-rhythms held within. Learn more.

Our marimba album recording studio journey is progressing well. We are looking forward to a mid-summer release date. Will keep you posted.

blessings,
Arlyn & David

Update

March 29, 2018 by ladyarlyn

Dear Ones,

Happy Spring. We hope you are well. Life continues to be incredibly full for us and this season is one where we spend time looking forward and planning the next cycle.

One of the things we’ve been planning is summercamp! Please click here for a link with the full details about our Marimba, Rhythm, and Music Summercamp. We’re really looking forward to immersing ourselves in music and nature for a week in July and hope you’ll join us if you are called. If you’re curious to see if deepening your relationship to music and life through marimba playing is for you, come to a workshop (details below) and check it out. We find that learning and playing marimba and rhythm instruments in a group setting teaches and embodies a lot of universal concepts that are applicable to any and all other art forms you might be learning or excited about.

Our next season’s World Music Concert Series has moved to the Paradise Theatre. We will be able to reveal the concerts to you very soon, when all the details are confirmed. We are excited for the new collaboration with the Paradise and look forward to bringing more world-class concerts to Paonia and the school-children of the area. Let us know if you would like to help bring the musicians into the local schools by underwriting all or part of a concert.

We’ve also been spending time in the recording studio with the Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble; the album is coming together and we’re looking forward to sharing it with you.

For your study/viewing pleasure here is a fun lesson on caxaxi shakers with David: https://youtu.be/EY1t034V6dc

best wishes,
Arlyn & David

Dear Ones,

We hope you are well. We have February planned with some great concerts and some fun marimba classes for both adults and youth. A great way to ease the oh-my-what-is-going-on-with-wintertime blues.

In addition to the concerts and marimba classes that begin this month, David will also begin a 5 week rhythm residency at the North Fork School of Integrated Studies working with the K-6 students.

We have a save the date for you – Marimba Summercamp, July 15-20, 2018 a sleep-away camp outside Crawford, CO. We’ll have the full details by our next newsletter.

With our Embodying Rhythm Marimba Ensemble, we spent the last week at the recording studio, it’s a very revealing process and exciting to be taking the music we’ve been working on to the next level. We’ll have something to share soon.

This month, Arts4All and The Learning Council in collaboration with the Blue Sage is bringing Uxia and Sergio into Paonia Elementary School to meet with the full student body plus some high schoolers. Last month, the musicians from the Silk Road concert were able to visit Hotchkiss seventh and eighth grade music students in addition to visiting the Paonia Elementary School. Here is a clip of them playing: https://youtu.be/R8nYZaG5keQ

We hope to see you soon.

best wishes,
Arlyn & David

It’s the only means by which we can reclaim our true nature or feel the subtle cues telling us how to find our way through life.”
