World Music in Paradise

David Alderdice is excited to be producing and artistically directing the World Music in Paradise Concert Series with the Paradise Theatre in Paonia with concerts, workshops and school outreach performances.

 

2021 – 2022  World Music in Paradise Concert Series Artists

Tickets $20.00 in advance/ $25.00 at the door/ $17 student (18 and under). Tickets available at the Paradise and online.
Workshops $10. No experience or materials needed.

 

Newpoli

Evening concert: Friday, 4 February 2022, 7pm, at the Paradise Theatre, 215 Grand Avenue, Paonia, Colorado. Tickets.

Called “…a brilliant outfit,…who grab southern Italian traditional music by the neck and recast it in a dramatic style” by Songlines (UK), Newpoli is a unique group with a powerful sound and a 21st century take on their tradition that is beyond comparison.

With exciting interpretations of traditional and originals that draw deeply from one of the world’s lesser known music traditions, Newpoli is Italy’s next inspiring interpreter of southern Italy’s taranta tradition.

Miguel Espinoza Flamenco Fusion plays a complex, rhythmic, lyrical blend of Flamenco, Jazz, European and Indian classical, as well as Afro-Caribbean-influenced styles. They connect strongly with their audiences and love to share their joyful music.

A 22 person Balinese orchestra with traditional dancers accompanied by bamboo flutes and hand drums. Tunas Mekar is under the direction of Balinese composer and Artist-in-Residence I Made Lasmawan.

Paa Kow and his Afro-fusion Orchestra

Evening concerts: Friday, 17 September 2021, 2 showings 6:00pm & 8:00pm at Poulos Park, 217 Grand Avenue, Paonia, Colorado

Ghana born drummer and composer, Paa Kow, (pronounced Pah-Ko), blends rhythm and artistry from his home with jazz and African roots creating his own Afro-Fusion sound. Dubbed “Ghana’s most artistic drummer” (Modern Ghana), he plays a custom, hand-carved, traditionally inspired Ghanaian drum set that is the only one of its kind in the world, guaranteeing an extraordinary cultural and musical experience. 

Paa Kow’s deep groove and prodigious talent reveal a unique ability to speak to listeners with his drums, inspiring a profound spiritual conversation and fulfilling his vision to spread the music and culture of his homeland by touring the world with his Afro-Fusion Orchestra.

About: Kardemimmit is a band of four awesome women playing the Finnish national instrument, kantele. The women compose, as well as arrange, write lyrics and produce. Alongside 15 and 38 stringed kanteles, you will find mesmerizing singing harmonies transporting you to a different time and place.

Marimba Ensemble Workshop with David Alderdice – Sunday, December 16th 10:00am at the Paradise Theatre. Come and experience the feeling of making wonderful sounds and musical vibrations with beautiful wooden tuned percussion instruments traditional to Zimbabwe. We will explore rhythm, groove, poly-rhythms, ensemble part playing and other aspects of music in a fun a safe group setting. No experience necessary, all instruments provided. Ages 9 through adult. Guitar Masterclass Workshop with Goran Ivanovic and Fareed Haque – Friday, October 19th 5:00pm at the Paradise Theatre. These two amazing world renowned acoustic guitar players will be giving an in-depth masterclass inspiring attendees with rhythms, melodies, techniques and ideas stemming from the flamenco, jazz, rock, and Balkan musical traditions. Feel free to bring a notebook and your guitar or instrument. Ages 13 through adult. Students (under 18) $15 / Adults $30.

Gamelan Angklung Music Workshop with Gamelan Tunas Mekar – Saturday, September 22nd 10:00am at the Paradise Theatre. Learn to play music on a traditional set of Balinese Gamelan Angklung from Balinese instructor and artist in residence, I Made Lasmawan and his students. Gamelan Angklung are tuned metal gongs and metelophones that you strike with a little wooden mallet. No experience necessary, all instruments provided. Ages 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Students (under 18) $5 / Adults $15.

Musekiwa Chingodza (one of our teachers) and Friends will be traveling through Colorado from Zimbabwe and will be offering a Zimbabwean Mbira (traditional thumb piano) Workshop at 4:30pm and a Zimbabwean Song Workshop at 5:30pm, on Tuesday, October 23rd as well as a house concert on Wednesday, October 24th at 6:30pm. These will be offered as special “add-on” events to the World Music in Paradise concert series, school outreach programs, and educational music workshops.   More info.

Latcho Drom documentary screening on Monday, August 27th, 2018. 7:00pm. $10 donation benefits the concert series. The journey of the Romany people told through musicians and dancers of India, Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France, and Spain. Co-sponsored by The Learning Council.

Program: Folk music of Galicia, Spain

Description: Iconic vocalist Uxía Senlle is one of the most respected and influential musicians from Galicia, Spain and regarded as the grande dame of Galician music. Her songs have the presence of traditional folk music but with a personal flair. Uxia is joined by Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Sergio Tannus. The concert will feature some of the most emblematic songs of her repertoire, including poems by such Galician writers as Rosalía de Castro or Uxío Novoneyra and adaptations of traditional Alalas, the oldest and best-known form of Galician music.

Description:  Musical traditions are portable, but they are also durable, and stubbornly take root in the lands where they were born. One of the most powerfully surviving features of the old Silk Road today is the variety of music performed, on instruments old and new, indigenous and imported, everywhere from the shores of the Mediterranean to the shores of the Pacific. This living musical heritage allows us to feel a link to thousands of years of trade and exchange among the peoples of the Silk Road.

MUSEKIWA CHINGODZA: Marimba Ensemble Workshop
Sunday, September 18th, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm. Join Zimbabwean master musician, Musekiwa for a fun and exciting group musical experience. Participants will learn and play music from a traditional Shona tune on a group of different sized wooden marimbas accompanied by hosho (African shakers).
