Marimba, Rhythm and Music Summercamp

Embodying Rhythm’s Marimba, Rhythm and Music Summercamp with David Alderdice and Arlyn Alderdice – July 15th through July 20th, 2018

marimba summercampThis year’s camp will be located on over 300 acres of private property outside of Crawford, CO at the modern Crystal Creek Lodge at the foot of Black Mesa. Experience the joy of making music in ensemble while learning fun, accessible, and applicable concepts about rhythm, melody, harmony, and groove. This camp is geared for students grades 6 through adult. We strongly believe that playing music in mixed ages groups brings both youth and adults to a higher playing level.

A typical day at camp will include a morning movement session, at least two marimba sessions and one drumming or percussion class, some rhythm games, three meals, and an evening campfire with music jams and group games. Part of the value of this camp is spending time out of cell phone range playing music at the edge of the wilderness. Another part of the value of this camp is the immersion into playing and learning music in a fun, safe, uplifting community oriented environment.

Sign-in will begin Sunday, July 15th at 3:00pm and orientation will begin around 4:30pm, please arrive or have your camp participants there, ready to participate in the group orientation by 4:30pm at the latest. The camp will end Friday evening by 9:00pm on July 20th. On that Friday evening, parents and families are invited to join us for an informal after-dinner concert and we will share the music that we’ve been working on throughout the week.

The camp fee (see below) includes simple mainly vegetarian meals, but participants should plan to bring supplemental food and snacks. Please let us know about any food allergies or special dietary requirements. Breakfast will likely be oatmeal, fruit, and hard-boiled eggs. Lunch will be sandwiches or wraps. Dinner will be simple one or two pot meals with salad and popcorn for snacks. We will provide the meal plan by request or after registration for your planning purposes.

There will be dormitory style sleeping arrangements inside the lodge. A couple couches or air mattresses might be available and there are four private bedrooms that can be rented, but most camp participants should plan on sleeping on the floor in the cabin or in a tent near the cabin. We would love to have all camp participants spend the night at camp for a fuller immersive experience, but if any camp participants really need to go home to sleep, please be back (or have them back) at camp by 8:30am every morning and they can be picked up at 9:00pm each evening. If you have special requests for a different time-frame schedule or scenario, we are happy to work with you but please talk to us about as far in advance as possible.

There is a land line telephone on the property so camp participants can call home to check in with their families or businesses.

We are planning a group hike up Bald Mountain, or a sit by the high mountain reservoir, on one of the days, which is an easy 3-4 mile round trip, class 1 trail hike that David, and Arlyn have hiked numerous times with their little one. This hike will be open to parents and families as well.
