June Update – workshops & performances

June 14, 2015 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

We hope you are doing well and enjoying the beginning of summer. Things here are good; the garden is growing quickly and so is our little one.

The Youth and Community Parade Band began in May, it’s been fun to start getting music together for parading. If you play a portable instrument at least at a beginning level, it’s not too late to get involved – Monday nights, details. And for those of you interested in parading but not playing, we’ll be bringing Soozie to town from Mud Puppet Theater soon for some puppet-making. We’ll keep you posted on the details.

We’ve been having fun getting music ready for the 3 upcoming local Free Marimba Concerts we’ll be playing, along with the Marimba Summer Camps that are happening soon in Paonia. We’re excited to be learning some new tunes and if you’ve been wanting to play with us – we’ve got one Marimba Ensemble Workshop and one Marimba Improvisation Playshop, both on June 27th, details. This is a great chance for all levels of marimba players (new-comers to the marimba are definitely welcome) to come together and enjoy the sounds and vibrations of these beautiful instruments.

And, partly inspired by the World Music Concert Series coming to the Blue Sage this coming season, we’re offering one Frame Drum Workshop and one Riq Workshop on June 28th. No prior experience required. Instruments will be provided, details. Here is a link to a video of our friend Miranda (coming to Paonia in 2016) singing and frame drumming for your inspiration: youtube.

We hope that whatever your endeavors are this summer, they are going fabulously.

blessings,

Arlyn and David

The Sun by Mary Oliver

Have you ever seen
anything
in your life
more wonderful

than the way the sun,
every evening,
relaxed and easy,
floats toward the horizon

and into the clouds or the hills,
or the rumpled sea,
and is gone–
and how it slides again

out of the blackness,
every morning,
on the other side of the world,
like a red flower

streaming upward on its heavenly oils,
say, on a morning in early summer,
at its perfect imperial distance–
and have you ever felt for anything
such wild love–
do you think there is anywhere, in any language,
a word billowing enough
for the pleasure

that fills you,
as the sun
reaches out,
as it warms you

as you stand there,
empty-handed–
or have you too
turned from this world–

or have you too
gone crazy
for power,
for things?

From “The Musical Life” by W.A. Mathieu

“My “symphony of place” is the totality of sound I register in the here and now. When I am aware of all the sound in the sphere around me, there is a completeness to my experience – a piece-ness. The place of my symphony can be circumscribed and local, or it can be far-flung even beyond my senses. For instance, when I listen to music in headphones, physical place is bounded by the geography between my hears. The horizon of sound is within my skull. This occurs also – without headphones – just before dropping off to sleep, when my mind, preparing its nest for the night, gathers up the universe.”

“. . . As your sense of place expands, your Symphony of Place becomes more inclusive. Your personal ecology broadens, and your sense of history also; you begin to hear the sound of your collective self. You realize how you are shaped by the sound of your culture and your world, past and present, and you take responsibility for your contribution.”

April Update

April 7, 2015 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

We hope that you are doing well.

Life continues to be a full-time adventure as we say “yes” to the opportunities that present themselves (and put ourselves in the line of some opportunities that we’re excited about).

We’ve been in rehearsal and the music is looking good for the Altius Quartet with the NFV Embodying Rhythm Marimba Project Concert scheduled at the Blue Sage for April 18th. A string quartet, marimbas, percussion, singing, and more. It is fun to see the evolution of the Marimba Project and we look forward to sharing more music with you.

Our Blue Sage adult marimba classes have wrapped-up, thanks for playing! We are happy to offer a new 4-week adult marimba improvisation class, beginning mid-April for folks wanting to check out the marimba for the first time or to continue their marimba playing adventures. More details below. Also, several people are interested in smaller marimba classes that meet up in Hotchkiss, if that’s you, drop us an email and we can help coordinate you with some other fun folks.

We’re thankful that support from The Learning Council is going to launch the North Fork Valley Community Stage and Parade Band – Monday nights 6:30-8pm starting May 11th at the Hotchkiss High School Band room. Everyone with an instrument and the basic skills to play the instrument at least at a beginning level are welcome. A super-fun way to play music with other folks. More details below.

The World Perspective Concerts with David Alderdice, Marcin Arendt, Joseph Mentoni and Mitch Montealegre are re-scheduled for mid-May. More details below.

David has just accepted a new position at the Blue Sage – the Artistic Director of World Music. He will be in charge of putting together 3 world music concerts as an add-on track to the Classical Music Series. We’ll have more details on the concerts as they are scheduled and are excited to choose some world music projects to bring to the North Fork Valley.

What to Remember When Waking
–by David Whyte (Dec 30, 2013)
In that first hardly noticed moment in which you wake,
coming back to this life from the other
more secret, moveable and frighteningly honest world
where everything began,
there is a small opening into the new day
which closes the moment you begin your plans.

What you can plan is too small for you to live.
What you can live wholeheartedly will make plans enough
for the vitality hidden in your sleep.

To be human is to become visible
while carrying what is hidden as a gift to others.
To remember the other world in this world
is to live in your true inheritance.

You are not a troubled guest on this earth,
you are not an accident amidst other accidents
you were invited from another and greater night
than the one from which you have just emerged.

Now, looking through the slanting light of the morning window
toward the mountain presence of everything that can be
what urgency calls you to your one love?
What shape waits in the seed of you
to grow and spread its branches
against a future sky?

Is it waiting in the fertile sea?
In the trees beyond the house?
In the life you can imagine for yourself?
In the open and lovely white page on the writing desk?
