July Updates

July 7, 2014 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

The heat is here – it’s such a good reminder as we melt in the heat to remember our longings of winter. . . tending our baby, gardening, hiking, stargazing, campfires, outdoor music, and other such summertime endeavors. What were you dreaming of in the cold dark of winter?

This winter we were also dreaming of marimba ensembles. And here they are; David just began a marimba summer-camp with 12 dedicated students – you can see the fruits of their labors on Friday, July 11 at 12:30pm at the Blue Sage. And we are excited to be offering another community marimba ensemble workshop on Saturday, July 12th at the Blue Sage in Paonia – 1-4pm (beat the afternoon heat with some fun music!). Marimba ensembles are great because there are simple parts as well as complex parts and both are necessary to the whole. If you’ve ever wanted to play music, this is a great introduction.

many blessings,
Arlyn and David

Out in the Open Air by Rumi (translation Coleman Barks)

Tell me, is there any blessing that someone’s not excluded
from? What do donkeys
have to do with fancy desserts? Every soul needs a
different nourishment, but
be aware if your food is accidental or habitual, or
something that feeds your
real nature. It may be, like those who eat clay, that human
beings have forgotten what
their original food is. They may be feeding diseases.
Our true food is the sun.
But we receive nourishment from everyone we meet. The body
and the personality form a cup.
You meet someone, and something is poured in. Planet
approaches planet, and both
are affected. A man and a woman come together, and there’s
a new baby! Iron and stone
converge: sparks. Rain soaks the ground and the fruits get
juicy. We walk into a ripe
orchard, and laughter enters our souls. From that emerges
generosity. From being out
in the open air, appetites sharpen. Flushed faces come from
the sun, that rose red,
the most beautiful color on earth. There is majesty in
these connections, invisible
grandeur. Live in that place of pure being. Don’t worry
about having ten days of
famousness. Revolve with me around the sun that never sets. . .

I’ll tell you what it’s time to do right now. It’s time
to set your schedule in order so that you don’t look back
on the day of your death and wonder why you never really
lived. It’s time to ignore the opinions of those who think
your life should be all about their cause, their rules,
their agenda, and not your soul’s desire. It’s time
to stop flagellating and start dancing.

February Update

February 12, 2014 by Arlyn

Dear Ones,

Greetings and Salutations.

We hope that this email finds you at peace with yourself in this moment.

Things with us have been good, very full. Arlyn’s pregnancy is progressing well and we are very grateful for that. She’s been cleaning, sewing, walking and doing yoga and other nest-building activities. Thank you for the love and support for this new life to come into the world. It is incredible to be so supported by the community.

David has been spending a lot of time learning and practicing marimba tunes and arranging and hangin’ out with his after-school music program at Hotchkiss High School as well as coaching the percussionists at the Hotchkiss K8 and teaching marimbas to the 5th,6th,&7th graders at the Blossom Valley Waldorf Initiative.

Speaking of marimbas….our new marimba arrived last month and we are super INSPIRED! It’s been so much fun learning songs and playing marimba music. We want to share it with everyone – we would love to bring marimba programs to the schools and libraries and other such places (Hotchkiss High School and Blossom Valley School are already on-board and starting to learn parts). We’d also love to start a community ensemble. However, a traditional ensemble has at least 7 marimbas and we currently have only one. We just today put in an order in for a second which is exciting because one of the neatest things about the marimbas is how all the different parts fit together simultaneously.

So, we’re looking at funding possibilities for MORE MARIMBAS. If you would like to participate click on “donate” or mail a check to “Embodying Rhythm”, 35003 Hanson Mesa Road, Hotchkiss CO 81419 with “marimba fund” in the memo field for any amount. We will be partnering with the Learning Cooperative a 501(c)3 non-profit, so if you need your donation to be tax-deductible, make your check payable to “The Learning Cooperative” with “marimba fund” in the memo. Most of the marimbas for an ensemble are between $1100 and $1400 with the baritone around $2,500 and the bass around $4,000, these are gorgeous performance quality wooden instruments hand-made in Santa Fe, NM. We’re getting our ducks in a row to apply for grants, but the grants want to see that we already have support for our project, so any little bit that you can offer will help. More info here.

Also, we wanted to share a taste of one of David’s musical projects the Sea Stars from a live performance at the Arise festival this summer. Click here to view the video on youtube. Click here for the new album (David plays percussion on it and we like it lots!)

Below is a list of a few upcoming performances, we hope to see you soon.

love to you,

Arlyn and David

There is a morning where presence

like a rooster in your earth-colored shape.
Your heart hears and, no longer frantic,
begins to dance. At that moment
soul reaches total emptiness.
Your heart becomes Mary, miraculously pregnant,
and body, like a two-day-old Jesus,
says wisdom words.
Now the heart turns to light,
and the body picks up the tempo.

December Update

December 8, 2013 by Arlyn

Dear One,

Blessings to you in this time of snowy weather. We hope that you’re staying warm and cozy (when you’re not out enjoying the snow). We remember this summer when we were busy with the garden, the backcountry, and food processing, thinking… “won’t it be nice to snuggle up by the fire with a book.” Now we are making sure to enjoy it while it’s here, rather than wanting to skip right back to the part where it’s warm out.

‘Tis the holiday season, and drum lessons make great holiday gifts! Call David at 872-4238 or email to inquire about scheduling your (or your loved one’s) drum, percussion, and rhythm lessons. As Rumi says, “The tambourine begs, Touch my skin so I can be myself.” Also see the events listed below for some fun holiday celebrations.

Our big news for the month is that Arlyn is pregnant, due in mid-April. We are thrilled and looking forward to this new addition to our family.

much love and many blessings on the coming New Year!

September and October Events

September 14, 2013 by Arlyn

Hello,

September has been slipping by incredibly quickly marked by the ripe tomatoes, peaches, nectarines, pears and other garden wonders. We’ve been busy in the kitchen nearly daily with freezing, canning and drying the bounty for the winter.

In musical news,

– David is putting together a project for Saturday night at the Mountain Harvest Festival at the Paradise Theater at 8:45pm. “A fun, eclectic world music ensemble featuring violin, bass clarinet, double bass, and drumset. This project combines improvisation with original arrangements; the sound is energetic, groovy and diverse in its range. David will be joined by his fellow Feast alumni’s Dr. Marcin Ardent (solo violinist, chamber musician, teacher, and arranger), and Benjamin de Kock (double bassist, freelance musician, and symphonist), as well as April Johannesen (multi-reeds instrumentalist, teacher, and performer). They will be joined on a few numbers by a few special guests including Tony Peters on trombone, Sticky Mulligan on tenor banjo, and Arlyn on shakers.” more info

[We’re really excited about this project, and for anyone who has wondered what David would do with an hour of music and some classically trained friends willing to play different styles and improvise, here’s your chance to find out.]

-The Sea Stars’ new album “THE UNKOWN” was just released on September 3rd. It’s a beautiful record that features Kurt Baumann and Katie Grey, backed up by Bill Renolds, Bridget Law and David Alderdice, as well as others. check it out: www.seastarsmusic.com

David does have some slots available in his teaching schedule for the fall, so if you, or your friend, or your parent, or your child has been thinking about (or dreaming about) drumming or drum lessons, now is a great time to start groovin’. (offering lessons: 5 week fall session Sept/Oct. and then resume Nov. 19 for the winter and spring). 872-4238 for details and scheduling.

All the best!
Arlyn and David

Something to think on. . .
If we are meant to continue living on this particular planet, we must switch—very rapidly, now—to a way of thinking and living that has never before existed. This is necessary because the conditions we now face as a species are utterly unprecedented. What this means is that no culture—I repeat, no culture whatsoever—can give us full instructions on how to embody this new consciousness. Every culture provides hints, but none by itself could possibly be complete. . .

So how does one steer a path that does not yet exist? Since there is no cultural map, we have no alternative but to rely completely on the internal compasses we all carry in our hearts
