“If I am not persistent with my desire to think about other things, and consciously initiate new circuits of thought, then those uninvited loops can generate new strength and begin monopolizing my mind again.

To counter their activities, I keep a handy list of three things available for me to turn my consciousness toward when I am in a state of need:

1) I remember something I find fascinating that I would like to ponder more deeply,

2) I think about something that brings me terrific joy,

or 3) I think about something I would like to do.”

It’s 2024

January 10, 2024 by ladyarlyn

Hello Dear Ones,

We hope your transition over to 2024 has been going smoothly. Things here are good and we’re hoping for some more snow in the mountains in Colorado to go with the cold weather. You?

New offering: join us for Second Sunday Solkattu Sessions starting this Sunday, January 14th from 10:30am-noon. details

Arlyn has a New Year, New Habits group that begins the week of January 15th. This will be the last online group she offers until earliest of the fall, so if you’ve been circling around and potentially interested, now would be a great time to check out this version of her work. Join the group and take time to cultivate more choice, self-compassion, a stronger mind-body connection, and nourishment for the body through gentle movement and focused internal attention. More information and registration.

On Saturday, January 20th, David will be performing with the NFV Community and Parade Band at the Paradise Theatre with an Evening of Swing, Funk and Fun! Get your tickets.

In 2024, we’re working to put together an album of music recordings done by local youth music students. It’s a fun project and we’ll let you know more about it as it progresses. If your 10-20 year old is seriously interested in music and might like to be involved in this project, please reply to this email and we can talk about ways to get them involved. This project is in collaboration with the local non-profit, Arts For All.

Please see below for our full calendar of upcoming events. We’ll see you soon.

blessings,
Arlyn & David

Book a free “discovery call” to talk about what life coaching is and how it might be utilized in your situation, it’s likely not what you think. Her Wayfinder Life Coach Certification is rooted in Martha Beck’s work, and what drew her originally was Beck’s book “Finding Your Way in a Wild New World” which details how to drop into the wordless state of communion with nature and self, how to connect with the oneness between self and the universe, how to be empowered by the spark of inspiration, and finally, how to take action and realize your creative potential to make a lasting impact in your own life and the world around you. Sound good? It is. Let’s play.

Audio-only movement and journaling practice

–

“If you know how to drop into Wordlessness, you’ll be so aware of your situation and your own responses to it that you’ll go straight toward your best life, no matter how obscure it may seem or how many obstacles lie before you. At a time when social change is so rapid and the pressures on each person so unpredictable, Wordlessness is a skill you truly need to find your way.”

Snowy Night by Mary Oliver

Last night, an owl
in the blue dark
tossed an indeterminate number
of carefully shaped sounds into
the world, in which,
a quarter of a mile away, I happened
to be standing.
I couldn’t tell
which one it was –
the barred or the great-horned
ship of the air –
it was that distant. But, anyway,
aren’t there moments
that are better than knowing something,
and sweeter? Snow was falling,
so much like stars
filling the dark trees
that one could easily imagine
its reason for being was nothing more
than prettiness. I suppose
if this were someone else’s story
they would have insisted on knowing
whatever is knowable – would have hurried
over the fields
to name it – the owl, I mean.
But it’s mine, this poem of the night,
and I just stood there, listening and holding out
my hands to the soft glitter
falling through the air. I love this world,
but not for its answers.
And I wish good luck to the owl,
whatever its name –
and I wish great welcome to the snow,
whatever its severe and comfortless
and beautiful meaning.

Q and A with Brené Brown on Gratitude

Question — “You’ve talked a lot about a surprising revelation in your research: that practicing gratitude is the key to joy. Why do you think this is?”

Answer — “Before the research, I’d assumed that joyful people were grateful people. But after interviewing thousands of people about their experiences of joy and gratitude, three patterns emerged:

1. Without exception, every person I interviewed who described living a joyful life or described themselves as joyful actively practiced gratitude and attributed their joyfulness to that practice.

2. Both joy and gratitude were described as spiritual practices that were bound to a belief in human interconnectedness and a power greater than us.

3. The difference between happiness and joy can be equated to the difference between a human emotion connected to circumstances and one that has a spiritual way of engaging with the world.”
